Singapore will roll out near 700 million Singapore dollars (570.5 million U.S. dollars) to improve its transport infrastructure to make transport nodes more accessible, conducive for commuters and elder people, the city- state's Ministry of Transport announced on Thursday.

They plan to build sheltered linkways within a 400-metre radius from all existing Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations, compared to the current radius of 200 metres. They will also connect shopping, leisure, commercial and residential developments within 200-metre radius of all bus interchanges, Light Rapid Transit (LRT) stations and high-usage bus shelters.

According to the ministry, the measure, which will be under construction from 2014 to 2018, is aim at promoting the use of public transport by enhancing the connectivity between transport nodes and trip generating hubs. It will cost about 330 million Singapore dollars (269 million U.S. dollars).

By 2018, there will be 200 kilometres of linkways added, while there are only 46 kilometres exists today. The sheltered linkways are very helpful for commuters to be protected from burning sun and sudden rain in this tropical country, so it may encourage more citizens to take public transport.

Meanwhile, there will be another 60 million Singapore dollars ( 48.9 million U.S. dollars) investment to install lifts to about 40 extra pedestrian overhead bridges by 2018, in order to bring more convenience to elder or special needs people.

Furthermore, the government also said they will take measures to minimise the impact of the land transport infrastructure, including installing some noise barriers. They intends to start the installation from the end of this year and complete them by 2020, costing 300 million Singapore dollars (244.5 million U.S. dollars).
